The SHELL Project

Today the communication between heterogeneous objects (electrical appliances, tablet, home automation system, home theatre) is possible thanks to the diffusion of electronic equipment, electrical appliances and personal devices.

During years, devices are increasing their interconnection and integration, but in the real market, opportunities promoted by this interconnection are not so easy to achieve.

The first objective is to pass from potentiality to actualization, starting from market’s products, to promote business and develop research activities into new solutions, innovative business models, new opportunities.

For this reason, the project proposes an interoperability, open, free, accessible framework; it is the crucial structure and the enabling tool for vertical solutions in different and multifunctional fields (energy, security, comfort). In this inls -lterconnected way, the complete openness and accessibility to technologic infrastructures will encourage innovation. The model will be open, win to win, based on open innovation paradigms, and on cooperation actions between manufacturing enterprises and not, small, medium and large enterprises, to improve traditional business and create new opportunities.

The programme also will analyse how to transform technological interoperability in commercial/business interoperability, through the creation of new professional profiles. The project boosts interoperability between home and automation devices on it; this interoperability grows energetic efficiency, safety and comfort. Home so is a functional and interoperable point, of a more widespread Smart Communities, open to new opportunities of Smart Cities.

Home now is a combination of sharing and interoperability ecosystems. This ecosystems change technologies for users, and foster an innovative environment based on automation appliances that make it comfortable and people oriented. The project suggests a complete technological substrate, based on interfaces’ integration, and networks of environmental and structural sensors. The electrical appliances, home furnishings, window and door fixtures and everything that interact with home users, become a source of information for core system, in which decisions and actions were planned.

Specific ontologies of devices (physical or virtual) will be defined and semantic description, of possible interaction between them, will be supplied. The interoperability framework, necessary to achieve objectives, will also include the definition of hardware design for modular interfaces and gateway that enable interoperability of objects, legacy systems and sensorial networks.

From the technological substrate will pass to services, introducing manager’s concept, a set of algorithms that escape from physical devices but they work on functions, excluding systems’ details.

Managers are connected with typologies of services and functions to act: energy manager, comfort manager, safety and security manager.

The model of sharing, qualified according to interoperability objective, represents the common aspect of the themes above. It allows sharing and exposition of data and actions of domestic living. This sharing permits an adapted and advanced interaction Human- Robots, and the interaction of home with more organised structures. The project also includes integration activities, prototyping and functional testing, to validate experimentally the framework in all its component, hardware and software.
