WP4 - Safety and Security Manager

In the traditional home automation, each service has a proper framework, with an exclusive use and several services are independent, they do not “speak” or interact between them. This carries to expensive duplications, difficulties in the coordination of functionalities, hidden exercise costs and to a reduced efficiency of home automation, in terms of security, comfort and economy. Therefore, a unique framework for services integration and communication is very important to avoid that kind of problems. The interoperability framework guarantees a high comfort level of living spaces; it ensures protection and safety against damaging events for health of structures and users; it contains energetic consumption.

Moreover this interoperability framework should have a strength safety that means a good capacity to forecast and react to unexpected events, such as breakdowns, or sudden changes of operative scenario that can damage people or objects. The prevention of breakdowns, reliability and continuity of operative functions, even if there is malfunctioning, are key elements, essential for the interoperability framework. This framework should forecast in advance malfunctioning; it should isolate damaged devices and work immediately to avoid that this breakdown affects the comfort of living ambient.

The framework should be able to implement fault management politics; these politics encourage security and comfort of living environment even if there are one or more breakdowns. In this way, homes can manage themselves: subsystems are able to self-monitoring or monitoring each other’s, to signal need for maintenance, when there is an interruption of performance levels, or when there are other similar problems. 

Security is another important aspect that should absolutely be integrated as a service inside interoperability framework. The traditional functions of security and safety disappeared; technological opportunities and new necessities overcame them. Security in fact, as concept or as solution, cannot be divided from a comfortable management of building.

The problem of actual security and safety systems, such as environmental security, internal and external intrusion security, surveillance, is that they cannot communicate between them or with the external, because they are single, autonomous systems. Even if with the actual technologies is possible to have the best management system, this system is not able to work in an integrated environment and to speak with the external. It has a fundamental lack of management in a world where communication and information are essential to respect the expected security levels. In this sense, SHELL is the biggest opportunity of this sector.

SHELL, and in particular Objective to Realize 4 (OR4), proposes and develops a safety and security manager. This will be able to manage and integrate in a unique framework all security and safety aspects. This manager consents the supervision of technical alarms; in this way there is an optimization of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance and a reduction of wasting time. In case of risk, the tele management of technical alarms will activate all the procedures linked to the intervention of a single event; these procedures will be active in the system until the solution of the problem. Single alarms will be automatically transferred to different subjects, according to table’s priority: Final User; Service Centre; Security Society; Society for the Maintenance, etc.

The safety and security manager will be developed through algorithms and models for the management of preventive maintenance and the breakdown diagnostic presented in the scientific literature. In this way, there is more protection of safety and security of people.
